The product permits developers to create applications that can import, display, convert and save images with this powerful new format.  By establishing an industry standard for wavelet technology, the JPEG group has advanced the cause for more powerful compression methods.  The quest for reduced size images is especially important for people creating web based applications that need to transmit their images quickly.
