Twain Scanning with Java

Newton, MA (January 17, 2001) – Snowbound Software has announced the release of a proven method for providing Twain scanning within the Java programming environment. By integrating the Twain compatibility features of their Windows imaging toolkit with the Java imaging toolkit, Snowbound Software has developed a reliable way of capturing a scanned image and bringing it into the Java program. Traditionally, scanner manufacturers have provided the Twain drivers. To date, however, there have not been any known development of Twain drivers for Java and this has been one limiting factor of Java for imaging. This documented method of Twain scanning into Java will allow developers the option of incorporating this feature into their application using Snowbound’s standard development tools.

The concept is fairly simple and requires platform dependence on the Windows platform. It does, however, allow the user to bring images into the Java program from the scanning device. There are two components that are required to make this work. The first is a Windows executable and the other is the Java applet, servlet or application. The Java component can actually be used to call the executable and run it. The Windows program will then call the Twain device, capture the image and store it in a file or directory. The Java component will then be able to retrieve the image from the file or directory and upload it to the web server.
