Implementing a Document Conversion Solution That Lasts

An organization’s collection of assets goes beyond financial and physical inventory. Your information, often contained in a collection of documents and images, is also considered an asset.

Whether you need to distribute, secure, or archive the information, document conversion plays an important role in managing your assets. Until recently these needs typically referred to a physical hardcopy file. With the explosion of e-business processes and workflow systems, electronic files are fast becoming the standard. Converting documents to electronic format provides advantages in ensuring longevity, maintaining integrity, and reducing storage requirements.

Because not all conversion software provides the same level of functionality it is important to consider the following when making your selection:

  • Speed – How quickly does the software convert the files? Does it handle batch conversion? Does the solution need to be web-based, server-based, or run from the desktop?
  • Automation – Can the software be set up to automatically convert files without manual intervention? Can the software be integrated into an existing application or program to perform the conversion as a part of a larger process?
  • Formats – Does the software support all or most of the formats needed? Does it handle legacy formats in addition to standard formats? (Consider both your immediate and future needs).
  • Compression – What compression methods are offered? What are the compression rates?
  • Exceptions – How does the software handle problem files? Do exceptions stall the conversion process?

Your immediate and future needs will drive the decision to use an out-of-the-box software application or developer tools that can be leveraged to build the conversion functionality into a larger application or solution. Selecting software and implementing a conversion process will provide an efficient and economical solution for future document and image handling requirements.

President's Corner

One of the questions I am often asked is how we manage to build, test and support our SDKs and Libraries for so many platforms. When we started this company, we made a commitment to permit developers to build applications that incorporate high-performance imaging capabilities without sacrificing features or functions because of platform. To a great extent, we continue to fulfill this commitment today across our entire family of RasterMaster products for Windows, .NET, Java, UNIX and Macintosh.

Our ability to perform this feat is based on our unique architecture and design. We create our Libraries with portability in mind. One of the key factors is that we port each RasterMaster starting from a single Library. Because we develop in-house from a single Library, most important features can be implemented and ported quickly and easily across all of our SDKs and to any of our other applications that leverage our Library. This also insures greater reliability and consistency among all our products.

I'd like to re-affirm our commitment to developing products in a rational and studied manner, ensuring that we provide you with the functionality you need on the platform you require. This commitment sets Snowbound apart as a leader in the imaging industry. I invite you to visit our website and take a look at the latest enhancements to our RasterMaster imaging SDKs.
